Back in the 1990s, my late Air Force father and I, for some inexplicable reason, got into golf for several years. The military golf courses were pretty reasonably priced, although the greens often left much to be desired, but it was a nice way to spend time together. We were both better at bowling, but something about being outside in nature for several hours was quite pleasant.
As we drove up the scenic Colonial Parkway along the York River, we used to listen to a John Denver tape that seemed to match the lovely scenery. John Denver liked to golf as well, but it was his brave attempts to emulate his pilot father which ultimately was his undoing.
John Denver died exactly 25 years ago on October 12, 1997. Exactly four years later, on October 12, 2001, we buried my father, who died from an inoperable brain tumor.
